Common problems

Water running from the pipe on your roof: A little water now and then is normal. If it runs for long periods or constantly, a valve that controls your hot water pressure is often faulty.
A higher power bill than normal: This can be a sign of a leak or a problem with the cylinder. We can check it, find the fault and fix it.
No hot water: Possible causes include the thermostat, a blown fuse, hot water overflowing on the roof, or the element.
No water pressure: Often the pressure reducing valve isn’t working properly.
Leaks: In the pipework, the cylinder itself, or from faulty valves.

If something goes wrong

For any leak, turn off the power to the cylinder at the switchboard. For a major leak, also turn the water off at your street meter. If the cylinder makes strange noises, switch it off. If steam comes out of your taps or vents, keep the tap running with children well away, turn the cylinder off and call us.

Low, medium or mains pressure?

Low pressure

Usually copper and vented, so you’ll often see a copper pipe sticking out of your roof.

Medium pressure

Stronger flow to showers and mixers without the cost of a full mains upgrade. Vitreous enamel lined, with upgraded valves.

Mains pressure

Usually glass-lined steel. Temperature barely changes when someone turns on another tap, but it helps less if your street pressure is low.

Safety tips

Fit a temperature limiting valve. It protects your family from being scalded if the thermostat fails.

Check your water temperature. Children can turn on a hot tap without realising how hot it is. As a rule, cylinders should be set at 55°C. Rest homes, daycares and health facilities have their own standards.
